The best garden in the world is only as good as its maintenance.  That includes all the old maxims like “Feed the soil not the plants.”
A knowledge of plant material is essential to a beautiful garden, when to feed, prune, transplant, where to plant and what to plant.
Containers add depth.  Custom planters and ceramics work well as do recycled elements like old fountains highlighting the season.
Asiatic lilies and rhododendrons give an exotic feel.  Morning sun for the rhodo and afternoon for the lily to spread its fragrance.
Use natives like redbud, Cercis candadensis, on ravines or in woodland gardens.  Moss phlox and rock walls are a classic.
Grass and monkshood keep interest in a perennial border right into November.  A fragrant clematis pushes an old spirea over the top.
